Its a research institute on nuclear physics (ipen.br/) with many centers...

The Physics Institute (http://www.if.usp.br) of the University of Sao Paulo (www.usp.br) has 6 departments and about 150 faculty in total. In the Department of Applied Physics (http://www.fap.if.usp.br) there is the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics (http://www.lfa.if.usp.br). IF-USP has both master and doctorate programs. The selection process has basically two steps. First you need to take the so-called Unified Exam in Physics (http://www.ifsc.usp.br/~posgraduacao/inf/exameUnificado2.php). This is an exam prepared by the Brazilian Society in Physics which covers, at an under-graduate level, the topics of: classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermo and statistical physics. Practically all physics institutes in all universities in Brazil use this exam as the first selection criteria for their post-graduation programs. The exam is applied in many different places across Brazil, and also, upon request, on many Latin American countries. When you apply for the exam, you must tell to which universities you want your results to be sent to. IAG-USP This is the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences of USP (www.iag.usp.br/). At the atmospheric sciences department, they are about 20 researcher, more or less 1-2 in each sub-area of meteorology. They do have people specialized in radar, but not in lidar. For their master program, they have a selection exam, while for the phd program the selection is done individually for each student. You must have an advisor and the selection is a presentation of your research project.

IPEN-USP This is where Landulfo works. Its a research institute on nuclear physics (ipen.br/) with many centers. Landulfo's group is at the Center for Lasers and Applications, but there is also a center for environmental chemistry. The selection process has just one language exam (english), but to be accepted you must have already an advisor and a research plan. UFRN-Natal The Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte is located in the northeast of Brazil, in a city called Natal which sits on the coast. They have a new post-graduate program which started about 5 years ago....
